hi
just come back from looking at a 318i but its quite noisey on the tappets. I arrived a little early and found the owner under the bonnet turning off the service light....
so really theres a chance its not been serviced since his ownership....
done about 117000 miles on an E plate. are tappets easy to sort out on a bmw? never done em before or should i just stay clear to be safe?

plastic bumpers. everything else seemed ok, usual torn drivers seat and a bit of rust under the rear wheel arch but nothing special that a rub down wouldnt fix
oh and on the E reg note, it was originally an F but someone put a private plate and had it changed back and it came back as an E. have seen the previous MOT's to clarify this.
are the tappets easy to sort out?

its a lot of work to quiet them..... or you can use something like wynns oil additive in your next oil change.... makes it quieter for a while but other than taking it to bits to get them dont bother cos its really not worth it... no damage at all is caused

I must admit, the tappets on my m40 engined e36 do piss me off sometimes, how much does it cost to get the m40 head reconditioned (im guessing this would stop the tapping)

its not the head tho is it, its the rockers that sit under the head (on a mini at least all you do is take the head off an theyre there!) then use a feeler gauge to set the gaps

Im not sure tbh, i stay well clear of doing anything with engines! The only thing i know about tappets is that it only takes my mechanic about 45 mins to set them on my M3 and he never charges me :D

I thought as much - like you say, if it was a 45 min job nobody would leave them tapping! Any info on what needs doing to get it sorted and how much it would cost ( my mechanic wont touch it, he says its a POS and not worth the time  )
