theres a way to test it ,a bit dodgy but works
with the engine running get a rolled up newspaper or magazine and sowly and carefully push it into the moving fan if the fan stops the coupling is fecked if it shreads the paper the fan is ok .
parts are about 30£ to fix it

Think they're something like £30 from GSF/Eurocarparts.
Just spin off the front of the waterpump with a REVERSE thread.
32mm spanner and give it a sharp tap with a hammer.
Problem arrises if some muppet has been there before, attacking it with a cold chisel or Loctiteing it on.
Note, they must be stored on edge, like they sit in the car.

be careful which gsf/ecp you buy them from as a few people seam to have had ones which are not stored correctly!
Although brian won't agree with this! you could do a electric fan conversion. I have a fan from a RS turbo, fits perfectly to the FRONT of the radiator. Cost me £10 from ebay bought a bit of thik wiring. My car never goes above halfway (just under even in central london traffic in this heat!)
Somesay it lets the engine give more power..

i tend to agree with the electric fan comments they do take some strain off the engine but at the mo beemer is cooling well even in this heat have fitted them on many cars except on my xjs which has a viscous fan but a secondary electric fan as things get hot on a v12
