My fuel gauge has been playing up and i need some advice as to what to do. its ok from full to half but as soon as it gets to half it just sticks and then the warning light comes on to tell me im close to empty. when i switch the car off the needle goes down so it cant be a sticky needle, would it be the fuel sender? is that cheap to replace? any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

i had this problem on my iS and did my brain in!

basically, i took my clocks out to replace some bulbs, and fitted a set of clocks from a 320i in my car. the problem occured. i did some research, and found out that all the 6 cylinder models had two sender units in the tank, and mine only had one, and therefore displayed an icorrect level of fuel. im assuming because the guage in the 320i clocks need info from both the sensors???

i also swapped my clocks from a 316i i was breaking, as i was messing around with my clocks doing odds and sods to them. the same problem occured, however, the 316i also had only one tank sensor!

so i wound myself up about it completely, and ripped my hair out, then i just put my clocks back in, and now i know what level the tank is at!!!

if anyone knows, please tell us!!!

First thing to try is to give the bolt behind the needle a little tweak with a spanner. Worked for me :)
