I Have just brought a E30 3201SE 1990 with 49K on the clock, needs body work, accident door and bonnet. It will be up to show standard when finished. But......

I have an idle problem, iv read lots of threads here and other places and cant seem to find the answer. Mine idles at 900. Engage gear and it rose to 1K seems to high to me. That's it, no back fire no rough idle, but it seems to much when slowing down (auto) on the brakes. Also the Fuel econ is crap!.

So I just fitted a new (£91) ICV and now its idles at 900 and when engaging gear it drops to 750 but still feels to high. Bearing in mind the mileage , my AFM is mint, there are no hose leaks. So what else, could the cold start injector be leaking making it run fast? Where is this and is it expensive (having blown my budget on a new ICV!!!)

Iv owned nearly all eighties BMWs Autos and manuals and this just does not feel right

been give a reply on another forum as :
" soz canni Help you on that one. Get on to E30zone and get Brian Mooooore to help you, he knowz Everything about E30's!! Put a post on the tech section there, an your sure to get some help!!"

Don't know if I can quite live up to that! But I'll have a try.

Crap fuel economy comes as standard with 320s, I'm afraid, and there is no cold start injector on your car, so it's not that.
Fitst thing I would do is remove the ICV (leave it connected electrically), block off both pipes to the ICV and see what happens to the idle then.
It should idle very low, or just stall. If it still idles high, then you have an air leak the engine side of the throttle, or some one has been messing with the throttle stop.
If the engine doesn't idle hiigh like this, then thoroughly check out the throttle position switch with a test meter.

Im at work today Sunday  ill try it out tomorrow when i get home.Do the pipes to the ICV need to be crimpped down? they are a very tight fit.
Also what is the pipe that comes out of the back of the inlet manifold and goes along the top of the rocker cover the the front by the Temp housing. Its a veryy small rubber pipe, ends up in a round cilinder thing. Had this off when running and makes no difference. Sorry for the vague description, Im better at painting than mechs. I like to get it running before attempting paint.
Cheers fro the help so far. :D
