hi

on my 1991 e30 325i, when driving the speedometer needle drops to zero
and after a while it will work properly again for few minutes until it drops to zero again.

can any one tell me where the problem is likely to be.

thanks

Check the back of the diff, there is a pulse sensor there and it could have broken connections.

Then it could be the cluster it self.

I had a totally non-functioning speedo, and found out the wires to the sensor on the diff had gone, but it then seemed to work fine when I soldered it all back together. But now I have exactly the same problem as you, though it only happens occasionally. So it's probably your cluster, as my whole cluster is unreliable. But check the sensor as well to make sure its nothing obvious down there

Wire to diff must be replaced, not repaired. The wire becomes brittle and will break again.
