Assuming you're driving an E30 BMW, breakdown cover would be an extravagance.

You could try joining ADAC - german breakdown service
Bit tricky to join from the UK I hear (prob have to phone em or fax em credit card details) but cheap and good

And an added bonus, if you stack at the 'ring and you ask for an ADAC recovery truck then you dont have to pay the recovery fee

See here:

Both AA & RAC never used to cover vehicles over 10 years old abroad, not sure if that's still the case. I get European breakdown/recovery for an extra £40 at Adrian Flux.

Its all very well saying that e30's are very reliable but you must rememeber that breakdown cover is not just for breakdown. It also covers you in event of a crash.

So what do you do if Jean-pierre rams the side of you in his renault 5? Not only will the 5 have desintegrate, but you may have a £400-500 bill for getting the car +you home!

RAC + AA will rape you for cars (I think over 15 years old)

I have First Call from www.moneysupermarket.com its about £65 for the whole year, covers everything (home start, roadside, tow you home europe etc etc)

Reason its cheap is because it covers the car not the person (like AA +RAC) so if you in someone elses car or haave more than one car its a bit useless.

I don't know what the services is like, becuase I haven't broken down/had a crash yet! But its piece of mind to me.
