This is the most serious thing to have happened to the car so far, so I cannot really complain - it seems to have locked the last time I closed it and none of the keys seem to unlock it.
Is there a standard manouevre to get it open?

Catch has broken on one side.
Undo the nuts that hold the hinge at the back (just behind carpet) and let back hang down.
This will open the gap a little at the fromt. Force the front down a little and unscrew two crosshead screws that hold up the front of the bracket the catch engages with. Youi should now be able to force the front down enough to release the hooks of the catch with a small screwdriver.
This happened to me a few months ago. 100 miles from home, no fuel, wallet in glovebox, on a petrol forecourt.

Will I then need a 'new' part or will this have solved the issue?
Thanks

You'll probably find that the catch is broken. When you lift the handle, only one of the catches will move inwards.
It's the back part you'll need, not the piece with the keyhole in.
