Engine Differences??

Its my understanding that early 325 sports had a higher compression engine than later models. What was actually changed when they did this? and does anyone know what the valve clearances are on the later spec engine?

From what I've read over the years the early high compression engines use different pistons to give the higher compression.
All the M20 6 cylinder engines have valve clearances of 0.25mm cold and 0.3mm hot.
