Only dud MPG gauge I came across was due to a burnt out component on the speedo board, and a faulty SI board. One damaged the other, but I don't know which way around.
Replaced the burnt out component, but still didn't work, so who;e cluster was changed.
If speedo works OK, then the odometer fault can only be the unit itself.
Think you can get replacemrnt gears for it in the US, but I would think it's easier to swap for a different one.
All the individual assemblies in E30 instrument clusters (except for very early ones) are interchangeable, regardless of the manufactuer.

My MPG gauge didnt work on my 316carb but that was because i fitted a weber carb. think they work off the vaccume of the engine.

no its not a carb. its an 88'. i noticed that when it did work the mpg gauge basically went with how far you pushed down gas peddle. could it be some kind of sensor on the linkage or some other sensor. ive dug the gauges out of the dash many times due to the odometer and it really isnt' that fun. and if thats what it is i'll do it but i would like to run other tests before i do it. also are there any other symptons of the faulty si board or component? maybe that will solve some other random problem that i don't quite know about yet. haha
