i've been reading up on the 2.8 liter conversion. i like it. i just have like a couple questions bout it. well with the conversion will you be getting a higher compression? when i say i higher im comparing it to a 325is. and im starting to think to much about it but with the new pistons what size piston rings would you run? and for the rear end what size gear would you use to take the most advantage of the new power on both ends for acceleration and speed?
for those who have done the conversion you would be of much help. i don't plan on doing this right away but in the future i plan on it and it seems to be one of the only options for me due to the price. and i like the whole idea better then engine swaps.
engine swap or 2.8 liter conversion

I take it you mean 2.8 stroke conversion not M52 engine swap.
If you are going to use a 2.8 crank with custom pistons you can order whatever compression you want. As for the rings, I should imagine that you'll get them with the new pistons.
As for the diff, a 3.64 or 3.7x should be fine or go 3.46 for better mileage.
Your last comment about this conversion being cheaper than a engine swap, I would consider you to be wrong unless it's hard/expensive to get the parts required for a engine swap.

well with the engine swap what engine would you recomend. i have my eye on the newer m3 3.0 or 3.2 liter engines. they seem to get great power and seems like a good fit. although i would be spending more money for it its probably worth it for the power. and if i were to do the swap does the tranny in the e30 fit the e36 engine or would i need a e36 tranny.
aside from that what engines do you recommend. i want the car to pass smog and i know if i stick to the six cyl they prolly won't notice
