Short Shifter Fun

Collected the parts I ordered from BMW this morning and have spent a couple of hours fitting my new short shifter

I got the Z3 2.8 shift lever on the advise of Hoshy, as he'd fitted that to his car, and I was impressed when I tried it at the rolling road meet last saturday.

Really worthwhile mod, and I recommend it to anyone, although I was glad I had use of a two post lift for removing and replacing the selector rod.

I am gonna do this mod myself aswell, i dont supose you have the part numbers for the Z3 2.8 shifter? I hear that its an even shorter shift than the 1.9 one and the part numbers listed are wrong by one digit in the articles section, allthough i could be wrong.

Sure, the part number for the 2.8 shift lever is 25.11.1.222.884.

Hoshy told me that the 2.8 was an even shorter throw, and after trying his I didn't want anything less.

I've only had chance to drive it a couple of miles since I fitted it, but as eko said, it wouldn't be nice going back to the standard one now!

Doesnt that shifter cross the line of confort and shift throw... heard its got a small throw but seems a bit knocky to use a better word?

was thinking about it myself but not sure on what shifter to use

I bought the bits to do this over a year ago, but never got round to doing it - decided I actually quite like the std throw

I tend to shift pretty quick anyway, and BMWs always seem to have knotchy boxes
I feel this will seem worse and I'll start missing shifts If I do the short shift conversion

If you don't wanna go too extreme I think the Z3 1.9 shifter will suit you.

I've got the 1.9 shifter on both my cars and I think it is perfect - a 100% improvement over standard and it'll take you 2 mins to get used to it.

I've just been out for a quick drive to get a better feel of it. It's probably very subjective which one you use, but I have not had any problems finding the gear I want, when I want. I think the speed of the change is not much different, but then in a road car the fractions of seconds you save are not really relevant. What I like is the fact that the feeling is improved greatly, and that all helps make the car feel tighter, and adds to the enjoyment. I was so impressed by Hoshy's last weekend I ordered the bits first thing after the bank holiday!

I think if other people are going to drive the car, maybe the 1.9 is the safe bet, but if it's only you who will drive the 2.8 lever would be the one to have.

Take your pic! The longer the part to the right of the line the shorter the throw!

nice. would be good to try out some of the z4 shifters. I like how they lower the overall height.

Don't suppose anyone knows the part numbers for the Z3-M and the Z4 - 3.0???

Which one should i use?!?!?!!

I'm thinking maybe the Z4 jobbie!!

I suspect if you use the Z3-M shifter you may have trouble getting the selector rod to clear the vibration damper on the prop, but the Z4 3.0 looks good.

The shift lever itself was £37.79 from my local main dealer. The total parts cost including new shims, circlips and a mounting as advised by the article in the technical section was £44.13.
