it was good fun while it lasted but after just 4200 miles on the rebuilt engine the blue cloud following me around means its in for another strip down and rebuild.i always felt there was something not quite right about it but i should get it back next week in tip top condition ready for the next power stage upgrade. if only all engines were as reliable and longlasting as a bmw engine

the engine was rebuilt 2 years ago with a complete new cylinder head, piston rings etc and had only done 70 miles when i had a major write off, snapped engine mounts, the works, the engine was salvaged and sat in my garage for 18 months until i had it fitted to my e30 last october, since then ive done just over 4000 miles, the mechanic says either piston rings or valve stem oil seals is the likely problem(it also has a new turbo)it hasnt blown completely, its just smoking badly sometimes with no loss of power.someone on passionford says the valve stem oil seals are prone to drying out and cracking if the engines not been used for a while.either way,its not a major problem and is just a minor setback.you cant do things like this and expect plain sailing winkeye

PMSL

A bit of oil aint the end of the world though, like you say, the valve stem oil seals do tend to go brittle from standing.

im not to fussed tbh,i always felt there was something not quite right about it.ive just been looking at prices for cosworth racing forged pistons and wondering if i can justify changing them at the moment since the engines going to be apart anyway.the bigger picture is that im eventually aiming for around 400 bhp and i would like it to last! i think ill speak to the mechanic on monday and see what he suggests winkeye
