a figure of around £16 each comes to mind. Just change the blue one. There's no point in changing the brown one, unless it's been shown to be the cause of a mis-reading temp gauge.

Onslow, I had my temp sensor changed and the part was £16. I still have a tickover issue though.
Let me know if you get to the bottom of your problem, it sounds similar to mine although I am getting better MPG and the car sounds lumpy on tickover not just fast.

The prices at BMW were: blue one 16 + vat and the brown was 11+vat.
From GSF =
B93490 WATER TEMPERATURE SENSOR General Use. Most Injection Models. 2 Pin Blue Cover 10.00
and
B93494 WATER TEMPERATURE SENSOR General Use. Most models 86>. Brown. Single Pin Conn. With Plastic Cap 5.50
I got the GSF ones and they are top quality.

Is it the brown one I need to change on my M50 conversion?
