IÔš've just received a cruise control kit today and IÔš've got a few questions about where some of the leads connect!

Some of these questions might become obvious when I fit the kit but its raining outside so it wonÔš't be tonight!

1) Is this a brake switch or a clutch switch? Which cable does it connect to as it doesnÔš't seem to fit with any on the loom

Image

2) Where does this wire go? Its about ԚÂa way along the loom. (Blue and Yellow)

Image

3) I understand this green thing plugs in behind the dash but what plugs into it?

Image

4) What do these connectors connect to? (The bigger plug has a has Purple and white wire and a red and green wire) (Is connector with the blue wire the power?)

Image

Thanks for any help!

Hi Mate,
The switch is the clutch switch. The brake switch is already on the car (for the brake lights) and th CC just plugs in to it. The green thing with the long needles goes in to the instrument panel, when you get it out you will see there are holes for it. Only one connector plugs in to it, I will check on my kit which one it is (think it is the blue and yellow one). One of the cables is an earth which you should earth in the glove box (pretty sure it's the blue one). One of them with one connector goes in to the (IIRC) top left connector of the junction box at the top left of the bulkhead in the glove box. That's all I can remember off the top of my head.

Loads of people have done this mod and someone some where was going to do a fitting guide. If it doesn't appear in a month I'll do one when I fit it to my touring.

Thanks for the reply - that gives me something to work with!

I'll be having a go at fitting it this weekend!

Thanks,

Andrew

Well I've fitted it once before, and then removed it to put in the tourign I have just bought. So I'll have a look in the boot tomorrow, If I look at mine I will be able to tell what all the wires are for.

Hi

Can help you with most bits as started fitting a kit today

Hardest bits are working where things will fit

dont forget bracket for clutch switch..takes a while to find position when you do its very obvious

Need to see where module is mounted under glovebox to do it properly

I now need to check the wiring diagram and work out where some wires go or come from:

The blue and yellow stripe one as you show goes from green plug at back of dash but you have 2 wires that spur from it lower down to work out where they go

The grey and yellow stripe from throttle pedal should have link up under the carpet but only other colour in footwell was being used for the speaker...so need to check this out on donor car

The Female connector blue and brown under passenger dash I also have to identify as may be an earth but need to check again on donor

So 4 wires to identify and then done and confirm control box location

SO can offer some help and while apart can take some pics of switch and wiring etc

Cheers

I have just fitted the kit to my second E30 and can help with some of this I think:

The switch you have in picture 1) looks like a brake pedal switch as the clutch switches are white. As far as I can figure, the clutch switch breaks a circuit while the brake switch makes a circuit. If it is by chance a clutch switch it should fit on the connector with green/red wire going into it and coming out of it.

The wire shown in picture 2) is the speed sense wire and it fits into any location in the green block shown on 3) and that in turn fits into the back of the cluster. If your car has ABS the block will already be fitted to the cluster and you can just push the sense wire into place from underneath with a long nose pliers.

The big connector in 4) is the power feed from the accesory socket. Bear in mind if you're fitting the kit to a 4 cylinder car that the appropriate pins will not be fitted in the matching accessory socket location and you'll have to draw a power feed from elsewhere.

Earth wire is brown as one would expect; The blue one IIRC is only used on Auto cars and can be ignored for manual cars.

Don't mean to hijack the post but I have a question to the people experienced with retrofitting cruise, who will be reading this post!

The kit I just fitted had a LHD loom and though all changes to RHD look correct, can anybody advise which wire turns off the cruise control when the brake pedal is depressed? Where is this feed taken from?
Have had to disable cruise until I get it to switch off when you press the brake.

The RHD loom was an easier fit on the other car and it turns off cruise when you brake as you would expect.

Good luck klu99apm

and thanks to anybody who can help with my loom issue,

Wiring diagram confirms blue and green is for autos...also the grey and yeallow looks like goes to auto box control unit so looks like no wires for throttle

Thanks for the replies! Sorry it took a while to see this - I've been without internet for a while.

I've got my cruise control fitted now and it works :D

The only thing I can't get to fit is the brake switch bracket and switch. I'll have a look again when I get a chance but for the moment it works fine with this switch bypassed.

I'm not quite sure where the cruise gets the feed for the brakes, but there is no switch to fit when fitting a cruise system, it uses the already fitted brake light switch..

It gets the brake feed from the block above the glove box.

Widge,

Thanks fo the help.

I know the cruise kit normally plugs a 2 pin socket into the accessory socket for power but didn't know the brake pedal signal came from there -

I'm fitting the cruise kit to a 4 cylinder car and the intended location in the accessory socket is not wired up.
I suppose one of my options would be to fit a second switch on the brake pedal which breaks the same circuit as the clutch switch does when the brake pedal is pressed.

The other option seems to be to wire the accessory socket on the 4 cylinder car the same as it is wired on a 6 cylinder car. If so, does anybody know how that socket is wired within the fuse box? i.e. Does the earth on the 2 pin accessory socket intended for cruise control momentarily go live when the brake pedal is pressed or is the live feed somehow interrupted?

Thanks,

In case it might be useful to anybody else,

If you want to fit Cruise control to a 318is, 318i or 316i,

Focusing on the accessory pulg that would normally plug into the accessory socket on a 6 cylinder car:

Take a feed from the green/red wire on the brake pedal switch and connect it to the green/red wire of the accessory plug

Take a fused live feed (ignition position 2) and connect it to the purple/white wire of the accessory plug.

This will disable your cruise control when you press on the brake pedal.

Apart from the fact that you will need a bowden cable from an 1991 E36 316i or 318i, all other details are the same as when retrofitting to a 6-cyliinder E30.
