my car makes a whining noise just before it fires up, could this be the starter or could it be the the drive wheel behind it.
I replaced a starter but was from a scrap yard, but still makes a similar noise?
Please help

The ICV makes a noise with the ignition on. Not confusing it with this are you?

wats the ICV? this sound occurs when the starter is in operation, it didnt used to happen before, I know what it should sound like coz weve got 4 e30's which are all 6 pot, infact 5.

You've got more 6 pots than me, so you should know what the normal sounds are!
ICV is idle control valve, by the way.
Only thing I can think of is thst both starters are spinning their motors before they engage the flywheel. Try swapping with one of your others.

I'd rather not take it out of any other. Its an absolute mission to replace the starter?
Is the starter on an auto the same a manual? (325i)
