Is this the release bearing ?
When i take my foot off the clutch, the noise disappears...

That will be the release bearing making the noise, but without hearing it, it's difficult to say whether its faulty or not.
Usualy replaced as part of a complete clutch assembly for about Ԛ£100 + fitting.

It's a characteristic of BMW's of this age that the bearing makes a kinda not grinding but rattling noise at idle with the clutch pedal up, it is normal just the bearing vibrating on the shaft as it has no load on it. Without hearing it it's impossible to tell how bad it is, but my brothers cab sounds like a marble in a coke can and works fine, just wait till it either gets difficult to push the clutch down or the clutch goes.
