I know of 2, pre facelift is "non-smiley" and post is smiley.
Upgrades to smiley are worthwhile i did on previous 1987 318i with good bulbs, i found it made a huge difference, fitting is simple one 3 large cross headed screws are removed. This are normally rusted to the car!!!, but its nothing that an impact driver cant sort out.

There are quite a few different types, including the US cars, but over here, it was 3 types, the non ellipsoid type which was fitted to pre-facelift cars, and then there were 2 types of ellipsoid, one with smiley cutout, and the other without.
The newer ellipsoid type are better, and will require some different wiring connectors to fit to a pre-facelift, but a straight swop otherwise.
