Hi folks,

Hopefully the collective knowledge here can help me out - I've been chasing a noise from the engine that has been worrying me.

It sounds like a bearing noise, which changes in pitch with the revs. It happens in neutral or in gear, and I have removed all belts and the viscous fan and it still happens. Could it be to do with the timing chain? The only current outstanding issue I have yet to fix is a slightly lumpy idle which I think is caused by a cracked/perished air intake boot.

If anyone has any clues, please let me know - and if this is just the sound that the M42 engine makes then I'm an idiot and apologise!

I've embedded a soundcloud clip of the noise in question - apologies if this is not allowed.

Also - I shamefully forgot to attach a pic of the car in my last post a couple of months ago!

Did you get to the bottom of the lumpy idle issue?
I believe mines is similar. Doesn't idle very smooth at all but runs and drives fine.
I believe it may be over fuelling slightly though.

Check around all of the vac pipes for cracks and splits casuing air leaks, especially under the intake. If no one has been in there before, there will be an absolute maze of pipes from factory… most of which are fairly pointless in our mild climate and can be deleted if you want to tidy things up as well as solve your idle issue!
