My 320 convertible has a single exit exhaust and i'd rather have the dual exit... My car is a 1988 320 chromie convertible, with no cat, but looks like a three piece exhaust.

Checking under the car today and it seems that two pipes come down from the manifold, then the two pipes hit a Y shape bracket making it a single pipe entry into the middle box which in turn has a single pipe exit. Then this single pipe goes into and out of the backbox... does that sound right? On RealOem, none of the diagrams for my car show this Y shaped bracket and just show two pipes going into the mid section and one coming out... is this another bodge I am uncovering or is this right?

Anyway, can i fit any 6-cylinder exhaust to the car? Or is it convertible specific?

Thanks in advance of your help!

Rich.

Understand for the 1988 Convertible Chromies for Feb production onwards (i.e. pre-facelift body, but using lots of non-body facelift parts)...
The 320i had dual pipe exhausts similar to the 325
- dual pipes all the way through
- except the tail pipes from the back box were a smaller diameter.

Here's a good visual albeit a US spec vehicle with a cat & centre resonator.

Have a look at Schmeidmann - they have complete systems from the manifold back.

A few guys here may have some recent experience.

Thanks dude, great picture. I did think that the 320's possibly had dual pipes from factory but I've seen some with a single exit.

Yes, with the proviso that the cut out in the rear valance is larger for twin tail pipes than for single.

Thanks, Brian. This is the simple answer I was hoping for - it is larger.
