Hello
I have an 88 325i sedan with manual box. Recently I had the head off and while it was out I had the intakes ported, 3 angle on the valves and a 285 cam installed. I also have the hartge headers and a twin 2 inch system and a high flow panel air filter.
Car is running great but with everything changed the ecu obviously needs fine tuning so I ordered a chip from turner Motorsport. The only problem is, when I ordered the chip I emailed them and told them the above mods to the car as well as my ecu number (153) but they never acknowledged my email. They didn’t even send me shipping confirmation but today the chip arrived and I’m a little scared to use it. It’s 100% the right chip for the specific ecu number as the instructions has that number printed on it.
So my question is, how much damage can this do if they have supplied a Jim comforti or whatever chip that was made for a stock engine or does this not even matter? Or maybe they have supplied a chip for a 285 cammed and ported head? My understanding is that the chip alters timing and fuel. With the stock ecu at the moment the car feels like it’s receiving too much fuel. I’m worried about installing the chip and detonating the roof of the pistons.
Sorry for the rambling post but I was hoping someone could help with the information.
Just to add, my cars build date is actually November 87 but I just order parts for an 88 as it has all the series 2 bits.
285 cam and turner chip

They’ve sent you a generic chip, there is no way to tell if it is going to screw the engine without testing it which has some risks. You could do it pretty safely on a dyno with a good operator which will tell you if the AFR are ok and they can listen for knock if they have equipment.
Once you go down this path of significant mods honestly you’re better to find someone relatively local who do custom chip on a rolling road or some other aftermarket ECU option that lets the car be live tuned otherwise you’re unlikely to get the best from the engine.
No one can remotely work out the proper fuelling and ignition based on a spec sheet other than get it in the ballpark. By 285 cam I assume you mean the old catcams 285 which is NLA , this is totally different from similar duration cams from schrick etc which are much more common in the USA so these people claiming to do custom stuff from are only going to get you so close. these guys do modified ones but the caveats still apply https://sssquid.com/v3/product-tag/e30-2/

I ended up installing the chip and running it. I’m glad to report it’s made a huge difference to mid range power. I think it was fueling up with the big cam and stock ecu beforehand.reggid wrote: ↑Sat Aug 22, 2020 1:07 amThey’ve sent you a generic chip, there is no way to tell if it is going to screw the engine without testing it which has some risks. The cam is a 285/285 billet but not from catcams. An engine builder who races e30’s here in Australia supplied it and did all the head work. Car is actually running amazing. Blitzed an e46 330ci last night and that was before the chip install.
Eventually I’ll have RHD ITB’s and megasquirt but for now I’m very happy with the Turner chip. It was a gamble running it though with their poor communication.
