Am I right I’m thinking you need car insurance to drive to have an mot test..

When oddly enough your insurance is void without an mot.

CORRECT, ALL VEHICLES MUST BE INSURED AT LEAST AT THE MINIMUM COVER (ROAD TRAFFIC ACT) WHEN ON ANY PUBLIC HIGHWAY/ ROAD, FOR WHATEVER REASON.
Everyone has the right to reach the level of their own incompetence.

The car has to be insured and can only travel to and from a testing station for a pre booked test so dont just turn up on the day if you have not booked.

Mart.
Only the E46 cab left now.
Just got too old.

What makes you think that?

Since 2011 the car needs to be insured t all times, whether used on the road or not, unless it is on SORN.

Mart.
If it fail the test, it can also be driven to and from 'a place of repair', as long as the reason for failure isn't considered bad enough for it to be unroadworthy. If it is, it can't be driven from the testing station for any reason.
