Hi all,

I've just replaced the power steering pump and alternator belts on my M20 whilst doing a timing belt change.

I've maxed out how far the alternator moves on its tensioning nut and the belt seems surprisingly slack. I have a similar situation on the power steering pump belt although I cant get the power steering pump all the way to the end of its travel on the tensioning nut.

I've double checked the sizing and the belts are definitely correct. I'm not sure if its just with them being new or slightly mis-shapen after storage or not. The belt doesn't seem to be slipping or anything so it does seem fine but just want to check.

Can anyone advise as to whether a bit of slack is normal or whether these should be pretty tensioned up?

Thanks in advance!

Belts should be tensioned to the normal 1/2" deflection on the longest span, and this should be well within the range of the tensioners.
Alternator belt should be 965mm x 9.5mm and the steering belt 825mm x 9.5mm for a 325i or 810mm for a 320i.
