:( Garages take the mick, see if you can fine a mechanically minded zoner near you who will do it..

I should't think that Gasket and head bolts would be more than Ԛ£100, Give the lovely willing zoner Ԛ£50 and a pint and there you go saved hundreds!

(my other half just done the gasket on a corsa we have, oil, oil filter, plugs, head gasket, rocker gasket, cambelt etc whole lot only cost Ԛ£40 direct from a motor factors!)

Never go to a high street motor factors, genuine BMW parts are not that expensive, or if you can get certain parts from a motor factor go to one that will sell you parts at trade price.

sorry didnt mean to waffle!

p.s I had to break my rover when the head gasket went, I get 50% discount as dad works for Rover, but meant it was still Ԛ£300!

The reason they are quoting me Ԛ£500 to Ԛ£700 is because the profile gasket has gone in the timing case which means the head has to come off and may have to be skimmed. The car has only done 80,000 miles and is emaculate so I think its worth having done. Its not going to a BMW dealer as they charge Ԛ£120 per hour labour.

Thats the 1 mate, where i work every head that comes off goes to a local engineering firm for a pressure test and skim, and they always come back looking brand new.... think they vopour blast them 8)

anyway this all adds to the cost but means that when it goes back together the head is 'right' and should seal 100%,

From what ive read, think this is a common fault with M42 engines at this mileage.

Mine was replaced at 98k :)

Hope to have it back by the end of the week. Let you all know when I get it back. Tony
