How do you find your vehicles original key number?
Dealer can't help.
Is it related to the VIN number?
Thanks,
Jon.

Dealer can provide a replacement key for your vehicle by giving them the VIN and proof of entitlement.
Don't quote me on this, but I think the key with built in torch is cheaper than the plain one, and should be the range £25 - £30.

Thank you for your answers, unfortunately they were of no help as i didn't fully explain the problem.
We have a 1990 318iS bought as a bare shell and built up to a complete car.
A lock set came with the shell and are probably the original set.
Two pattern keys came with the locks so we bought a BLANK torch key from BMW (£58).
My locksmith is refusing to copy the pattern key cut onto the expensive torch key as he is fairly sure there will be operating problems because the keys being copied are not the originals and he doesn't want to risk the torch key being useless or poor at operating the locks.
The locksmith asked if we could find out the key number (hence original post) as he could then do a computer key cut using just the key number. This would be as good as a factory cut.
I cant find out the key number but the locksmith also suggested taking out the drivers door key barrel as there should be the key number stamped on it. Removed and can't find the number.
If I remove the tumblers, does the tumbler number and order give the key number (like old Tibbe Ford locks)?
How can I find the key number??
Jon.
