5w 40 oil

Can anybody confirm this is too thin for the old M20 lump.
Could it, would it lead to oil in places it shouldn't be? i.e: air filter.

Don't think so .... oilman recommended I use 5w-40 in my 2.5 - mind you it is low mileage (75000km)

I have been using Mobil 1 in my 325i Sport for the last 10 years, and it has been sweet as a nut.

(5-50 for the first 5 years and 0-40 for the last 5)

Yeah, I was sure I had seen threads on this, that's why I put it in. Could be something more sinister then.
