Hi guys, i'm trying to identify an engine which was in my 318i when i bought it. I'm fairly sure it's not the original engine for the car, as it's six cylinder. The stamps on the block read: top line 23 6E C and bottom line 22203599 If anyone can help with age, capacity and engine type i would be grateful, thanks, James.

Sounds like a M20B23.

First two numbers in a BMW engine type number indicate the capacity. Your original engine's number would have started 18, 2 litre engines start 20, 2.3 litre start 23 and 2.5 litres start 25.
