strange starting fault.

When I crank the engine over,the starter motor spins the engine over as normal but other times it cranks the engine over slowly but it it still starts.I found if it cranks slowly I can can return the key to the off position and try again and it cranks over as normal.The starter motor is only a couple of years old,could it be a fault with the ignition barrel?
