While Im doing the engine in the car I thought Id have a quick look at the speakers seeing they sounded terrible.
I got them out and they were alot worse than I had expected as you can see below! No wonder they sounded so bad! The rubber surround has completely gone! lol

Ive bought a set of these Alpine coaxials and hopefully they will sound alot better but I wont know until the engine is rebuilt and I have the battery back in. :)

hehe! i found this on my wifes 525i the other day. the car came with a dead CD player and after a couple of months i finally got round to fitting a good one, it sounded great at first, then 30 mins later it sounded terrible! the surrounds just fell apart like that!

when you fit them, make sure the new speakers totally cover / fill the hole as my new ones were about 2mm too small and didn't make a total seal. makes it a bit 'chuffy'. some of that door/window sealing foam strip from b&q will do the trick, just sandwich it in the gap when fitting the speakers.

Mine were just the same. The rear ones are much worse for this than the fronts but all will probably have partially disintegrated by now.

Im debating whether or not I should put my amp and sub in the car. To be honest the car sounded that nice before the engine went pop that I wouldnt want the music up too loud anyway plus I dont want the sub flying around in the boot when Ive got the tail out. :D

A sub will help the balance out though :)

My rears were the same also.

When you fit the new speakers just make sure you pack the back of the speakers nice and tightly, try to make it air-tight from the rear to the front or the speaker if you see what I mean. Crap install will have even the best speaker sounding shite. In fact, read paul's guide in the articles section. Maybe not all relevant but worth taking the time.
