Changed valve cover gasket/bolts on M42. Now turns over but doesn't start. I don't want to try too many times for fear of wrecking it. There is a vague burning smell too.

I take it this is not normal! Help!!!

Sorted! What an idiot I am - confusing firing order with actual order.

Embarrassed...

Cylinders are numbered 1 to 4 with 1 at the front and each coil in the pack on the wing has a number from 1 to 4. I will leave it to you to work out which coil goes to which plug.

If you use Google Images and the search term 'M42 firing sequence' you will find some pictures.

As Brian says, check the plug leads are not sitting in a pool of oil.

If you are Ratch is this going to turn out to be a joke?

No, honestly I am not Ratch. I will check plug leads.

Is there some way of proving I am NOT Ratch for God's sake!!! He's competent. I'm not.

Why would plug leads be sitting in oil though?

Will my attempts to start with plugs in the wrong order have done any badness?
