Looking for an insurer who can do a 2-3 month policy at normal classic rates - any suggestions ?
I dont want to pay up front or get roped into a credit agreement for 12 months cover when potentially it will be coming off the road at the end of september or october for up to 6 months and sat in the garage.
Any suggestions ? Also suggestions for tpft "laid up" cover over the winter ?

Lancaster classic insurance, awesome to deal with! They actually have car knowledge!!
I have a mk1 fiesta laid up that I pay a £68.90 premium on (1000 miles and fully comp) so if i want to take it out, or drive to a show, I can.
I also have my e30 sport with lancaster, all mods declared, fully comp, me and the mrs £19 per month. If you cancel early they hit you with a small fee, only £20 ish, but..... if you tell them you sold the car and you will be insuring with them again in future they are very quick to let it slide!
They're just a broker essentially, I think my insurance docs say "Chaucer".

Don't you have to have car insurance even if it is off road and SORN'd.?

Thanks. Mind you, makes sense to have it insured while off road. You never know, it could catch fire or get stolen..

But what would you claim on if your garage caught fire or some lowlife nicked it?capri_rob wrote:Nope if its garaged and off the public road you dont need to have insurance if its on SORN
I keep the cabbie on cover all year,it's costing me £3 a week....even though it's sorn'd from the end of October until the start of April.

I know what you mean malc but i dont see the point in paying full whack for year round insurance when it only actually gets driven for 6 months.
If a full on classic policy is say £150 for a year i would hope to be able to get a 6 months full road, 6 months laid up policy for no more than £100

My classic insurance is £109 for 12months. I keep it insured even if sorned. As mentioned above, if some tw@t nicks it out your garage and no insurance it's gone.

After the fire I had, I was surprised to learn my home insurance wouldn't have covered the car if it had gone up. Not sure why I thought it would mind.
Need to insure the Sport. It won't cost me a great deal, to insure my new 325i it cost me £212 fully comp. Not bad for a 24 year old

Thats why i want a half and half type policy - there must be thousands of classic owners who, only use their car for 6 months of the year or less in the summer and have it garaged the rest of the year .Sanchez wrote:My classic insurance is £109 for 12months. From an insurance perspective most of the risk that drives the premium must come from when the cars actually getting driven as opposed to when its just sat in the garage so it follows that you should be able to get some sort of reduction on premium if your cars time on the road is limited to 6 months out of 12

Talk to a few insurers,Rob,I am sure that they will tell you that a classics policy is based on limited use.
This is usually by a milage limit....an easy way to limit risk. The insurer's know that most,if not all, cars covered this way do not see a salty road.If next Boxing Day is sunny, just check out how many classics you see out,if the things were covered in the way you are suggesting, this would not be possible.
Like wise on a warm Febuary day....
Snag with our cars,of course,is that to take advantage of a sunny winter day,we need to buy 12 months road rent!

Unless you just tax it monthly? I thought thats what you could do now. A bit of faff taxing it and sorning it but at least you can buy a monbth at a time. I pay my car tax monthly.daimlerman wrote:Talk to a few insurers,Rob,I am sure that they will tell you that a classics policy is based on limited use.

And me the monthly tax has made it slightly more palatable.
Looks like ill be phoning round this week. Lancaster want £163 but £25 of that is legal expenses cover which we no longer need thanks to e30beemerlad
