I've read somewhere about 6 speed conversions and it wasn't recommended.
I think it would require a longer gearbox and changing transmission parts. Better to upgrade your differential to get better acceleration, maybe.

Ah found it -
"Could it be done? Sure, but why would you want to? Six-cog gearboxes have a great deal more to do with marketing and one-upsmanship than they do actual performance benefits. Most cars with sixth-gear intergallactic overdrive, including the E46 M3 in my opinion, do not have sufficient differential gearing to take advantage of the fact."

I forgot to mention this is an American site and the BMWs over there tend to be a bit different but may still be the same with regard to changing gerbox anyhow.

I know what you mean - I had thought the same thing - that's how i found that article.

I would be interested to see if the more technically minded folk here have any opinions...

Fitting a 6 speed box is not going to make any difference to how fast the car goes.

6th gear is the same ratio as 5th in the regular 5 speed E30 box. The extra gear is in the lower gears and is designed to allow you to have closer ratio's.

You can physically fit an E36 M3 6 speed box on an M20 engine, but it's more trouble than it's worth.
