My car is a 318i auto and I find I don't get any power steering assistance at low speed when trying to park. If I raise the engine speed I get more assistance, but the car moves to fast. If it was a manual I could slip the clutch and raise the engine speed, but with it being an auto raising the engine speed whilst parking will cause an accident.
Surely this isn't how all auto's are? Is my PAS pump knackered?
BTW I have fitted a new rack and lines, the problem is still there.

Belt is good and tight.
Definitely not down to the low engine speed? (Almost idle)
I just don't want to waste money on a new pump to get the same results.
