I am currently restoring the inside of my E30.

I was looking on changing the carpet inside the car to black, you can buy the car carpet on the roll from Ebay, would I need to put some sort of underlay in the car.

Can you put this on top of my existing carpet?

What would be best?

Thanks

You haven't said what type of carpet you have,if you have a nice 6 pot carpet then get a quality carpet dye and dye it black.
It won't work on a 4 pot carpet very well if at all.

Why not just dye your current carpet?

4pot is a 'loop' type material a 6pot is a 'twist' and more plush and a deeper pile than the 4pot
And is your car a 4 or 6 pot?

I think mine is a four pot as it's quite flat and rugged asapose to luxury feel.

bimanut means does your car have a 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder engine.

From the wiki...
Two materials were used for E30 carpets. M20-engine models, Cabriolets and Tourings have a velour-type material, which can be dyed if needed. The lower 4-cylinder models have a nylon hard-wearing carpet which cannot be dyed.

E30 carpet is moulded to the car, replacing with stuff of the roll will involve fitting it in many pieces all cut to shape/size, the edges would then need binding. This is how carpet used to made back in the day, I'm no expert but it will probably cost a fortune, maybe someone like woolies trim has a pattern, I doubt it though.

Thanks mate, I'm going to give it a shot and dye it. As the carpet is in good condition just needs a good clean. Watched some vids on YouTube.

I will post up a few pics on the progress!
