I'm trying to work out if my car is fitted with a Catalyst and lambda sensor.
Its a 1988 325i touring.
It had a new exhaust fitted by the previous owner last summer and I've had a look underneath. Its got a large rear silence but also a smaller 'silencer' shaped object in the middle of the car. Is this the catalyst?
Thanks for any help!

very unlikely your car has a cat being an 88
one way to tell is to look down the engine bay on the drivers side (exhaust side) just undernteath where the battery sits will be a plug for the lamda sensor iff fitted you can see the lamde probe in the exhaust from this position located in the downpipe near the gearbox

If it's an 88 model, i doubt that it has a catalyst but if you want to make double sure, ask at your local bmw dealer for a printout of the factory spec for your car - the parts department always provide me with these (usually just need your chassis or reg number) and this will state whether or not it was fitted.

The standard 325i system has two silencer cans. A large rear one, and a much smaller flatish one in the middle of the car which acts as a crossover for the two pipes.

Cheers,
Andrew
