My early 323i has the dodgy 3 bolt flange on the exhaust manifold. Being an Australian market car, the manifold had the anti smog pipes. These broke year ago and attempted to gas me. I welded up the holes left by the anti smog pipes, but it is still rubbish. The exhaust is not too well either. I have decided to bight the bullet. I have found a later 325 exhaust manifold with a 4 bolt flange and non of the anti smog nonsense. I am having this planed on the two mating faces. Once this is in I am having a stainless system made up By a local specialist who comes recommended by other local E30 folks.
Anyone done something similar?
Can I run the more modern heat shields that are integral to the manifold gaskets?

All sounds like a good idea. The combined gasket/heat shields should fit OK, and I'd recommend a set of new studs and the correct copper coated nuts to suit.
