Sadly, it's that time when the 318i needs a service so I've been looking for oil and filters for it. Looking on the service part of this site it doesn't specify which oil is recommended, but I vaguely remember BMW recommending Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 semi-synthetic (I think) when I was there last for the odd part number?

And a FRAM oil filter is recommended but I can't seem to find the right one locally or online? There are also 2 different sizes listen on eurocars website, is there anyway to tell which size you need?

or any recommendations/links to ones you would advice? :D

Semi synthetic is fine, full synthetic is better, but whether it's justifiable on an engine as basic (by today's standards) as a M40 is debatable.
If you click on 'parts details' on the ECP filter page, you'll see that the two filters are for engines with an alloy cover to the filter housing, and for those with a plastic cover.

Cheers for the hint about the filter, I looked at those for ages, and never even noticed the different cover types... :hammer:

Hal4ords are selling 10w40 semi-synthetic at £12 for 4 litres, is this ok for a 318i (M10)?

(Also, a Mann oil filter on CP4L is currently £3, before discount.)

Hope this helps, :)
Moredoor autos with small engines are cool - but my new m20b25 is awesome!

Get the filter from the dealers, they're only like £12 or something..

And lets not start another oil thread.. they can easily get out of hand :D
