Morning all,
I currently have a pioneer pull out head unit in my 320 complete with cassette player, it looks right at home & in keeping with the car but I want mp3 compatibility so need to change it. What do you all have in your E30's as I want a unit that doesn't look out of place. As a last resort I'm going to look into getting my current head unit converted to modern internals but this will be expensive.

That looks awesome, should be good when it's done. Sadly that is way beyond me, I'm good with nuts & bolts but wiring is something I don't have the patience for (Ask the people I do work for lol)
So I'm looking for a plug & play kit or someone who could do this to my head unit...

you can get a couple of different gadgets. Have a look at this page:

I have tried the cassette type and the FM transmitter, i quite liked the cassette as it worked very well with no interference, the FM had good quality but did crackle sometimes.
Neither are perfect but cheap and good as a short term fix.

Alpine UTE72BT £50 on offer at Halfords (now £80 I think). 3.5mm Aux in and USB port, but the reason I got it was the full bluetooth control and hands free calling - you can just see the supplied microphone clipped to the under dash panel in the bottom right of the pics.
It is a complete driveless unit, but that means my glovebox and door pockets no longer rattle with CDs!
It doesn't look too out of place, doesn't look garish and considering the others available at the price, it was a bargain. The only thing I don't like is the big red button, but it sort of goes with the E30 orange lighting.

And lit up...

There's a few companies that you can send a period head unit to, and they will refurbish it and add a 3.5 jack, and a usb power cable , and Bluetooth , all comming from the rear, with cables that you run in to the glove box to keep out of sight

That Alpine doesn't look too out of place, I may have to go buy one & keep the old one for refurbishment/modification when I have more time, spare cash. Now my wife was asking me what I wanted for Xmas.... A new head unit it is
