idle problem on 325 e30 sport

my friends e30 325 sport is idling really high when stationary sometimes above 2k rpm. When he lets the clutch out it goes back to a much lower revs and then eventually back to a good idle. Does anyone have any ideas what this mayb be due to?thanks scott

possibly the idle control valve
