The fan is inside, under the dash... don't know where the resistor pack is, but i would guess it's attached to the heater assembly under the dash somewhere...

Looks like i made a mistake, just taken a look at my Bentley manual, and it says you access the heater blower from the engine bay! well i never knew that..... You need to remove the panel in your last picture, it's behind that.

I'm just reading the rest of the article to find out where the resistor pack is....

I'll be back..

You were right..

The Blower motor resistors are behind the blower motor.

So there fore you will need to remove the panel that is behind the the wiring on the bulkhead as in your picture 2. Then remove the motor which will gain you access to the resistors.

Sorry for the earlier confusion

Link is good for showing you how to get to the motor, but don't be surprised if you can't find the resistors.
Everttime I've had occassion to hunt for the resistor pack, I've found it slotted into the left side of the heater casing, near the electric water valve.

Think BMW fitted two types of blower motor. One with resistors located as Brian has described and one , like mine slotted into the front between the 2 rotors. There's a 'belt' fixing wrapped over the centre. Under it and you can lift up the top cowling and expose the fans and the resistor pack slotted in the front. A good clean up and lubrication cured all my heater blower probs - noise and speeds.
Just read link - look before you leap - and it describes it better than I've just done. But it's not a hard job. Just a bit messy!

Thank God I am not the only person who can't find the famous resistor pack.
The passenger side heater on my facelift 320i looks like the pics posted on this thread.
Please, can anyone put an X where the resistor pack is?

Should be able to find the resistor pack by following the wires.

Top left of your first picture is an electrical connector (green and possibly yellow wires) connected onto a browny/pink coloured square unit, this is your target!

Squeeze the 'lugs'on the connector and disconnect the plug, then, squeeze the 'lugs' on the resistor pack and remove it from the heater box, and then test it's resistance and check continuity from the fan switch to the resistor.

I'VE GOT IT!!!!!!

Image

(can anyone guess i got a digital camera for christmas!?)

the resistors themselves are ok but the bits they're attatched to are rusty as hell. once the skin grows back over my fingertips i'll try'n take it apart and clean it up and post the results

a big thanks to everyone who helped

oh i also found two cassettes from a previous owner and two football sweeps dated 12th mar '94!! how they got under the dash i'll never know :o
