Hi Guys,
Can you give me a list of parts, suppliers and prices so that I can buy the bits needed for the service please.
(I'd rather buy the bits myself than ask the garage to do this, despite their very good ability to be able to do the work).
325i, 1991.
TIA!

I'd watch them with the valve clearances. Wouldnt be the first to tell you it's done and not even touch it.
I got told by a well known west London dealership that they had done this, and they even charged me for the rocker gasket, yet didnt go anywhere near it.

Thanks guys. So, apart from the main dealers, where is the best place for the bits needed, please?
Thanks.
Thanks.

ECP \ CP4L and GSF will all be able to supply the bits you need.

ContiTech from ECP do cambelt kitGert_8 wrote:Thanks Barryis there a cam belt kit?
May as well change alternator belt, PAS belt as well. ContiTech make these and can get from ECP
ContiTech are same manufacturer as BMW Dealer parts
While changing the belts could do water pump as well for precaution

Contitech M20 cambelt kit about £40 from ECP plus you want the aux belts about a tenner each.
PAS belt 202110015
Alternator belt 202110035
Both contitech and ECP part numbers.

If you're putting in a new timing belt kit. You might as well get a new tension spring from the dealers. Chances are the springs not there currently and with that the pin that goes inside it.
Both pin and spring aren't too expensive from the dealers.

I was going to ask about the tensioner. Dealers are the best for that then? Thanks.

Febi also do a cam belt kit - they're on eBay for £30.
I know they're an OEM, but not sure if it's worth the extra tenner on an ECP one?
(Mine's got a 2006 Febi on it atm, and hasn't snapped yet...)

Has it been on there 8 years?
It's pushing it if it is as the interval is every 4 years.

If we're being anal about this, you actually want 5w-40 synthetic oil.pony wrote:Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 (I think?) part synthetic ..You want the part synthetic one

Why would you want a semi synthetic? Strange place to start cutting costs after that list.pony wrote:

Any local motor factors like Euro car parts sell OE quality service parts.
Its cheaper to buy the tensioner and cam belt separately at ECP. I have no problem using Triple
QX oils and antifreeze. Semi-synthetic engine oil 10w40 and change every 5,000 miles.

I too would have thought Castrol Fully Synthetic Edge would have been best
However, I had BMW Inspection II Service in March/April 14 and bought the engine oil bss325i (who was doing the servicing) recommended which was Castrol Magnatec. This is part synthetic. I forget the oil grade but I bought the grade he recommended 10W-40.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using a 10w40 semi in an m20 if changed regularly

Nothing wrong with it, as you say. There's nothing wrong with using a 20W-50 mineral oil, as recommended by the handbook that came with the car. Even the cheapest discount store special is likely to be the equal or superior to the best 20W-50 that was around when that handbook was written, but a full synthetic is more stable, longer lasting and generally superior to a part synthetic, so why not use it? The cost of engine oil is a very small proportion of total running costs.bss325i wrote:There is absolutely nothing wrong with using a 10w40 semi in an m20 if changed regularly

If using a 10w40 semi has ZERO detrimental effect then why pay more for something that gives no advantage?
It's almost akin to running an M20 on super unleaded.

Not the same at all. There is ZERO advantage in running a M20 on super unleaded, but a synthetic oil does what oil does better than a semi synthetic.
M20s aren't fussy what oil they use, but in cases (for example) where the flow to the rockers/cam is inadequate, a cam might just survive intact with synthetic oil, but might fail with a semi.

Barry you rag the arse out of your cars and magnatec is crap oil thats fact.
As said a pukka 5-40 ester based synthetic oil like silkolene pro s or similar will be much better and the oil is much more stable at running temps and even more so at high temps, this has been done a million times though and no one is holding a gun to your head
I'd use magantec in my lawn mower and 316's but not on an engine i was keeping for a long time.
You can stretch the intervals a bit with better oil its hardly bank breaking £50 for 5 litres of the good stuff
E30's came with michelin MMX tyres would keep fitting them and NCT 5's and any other old crap like that? Oil like tyres has moved on a million miles since the 80's
