The bracket that has one of the 2 philips screws on the back off the seat (the big ones, once you get the back covers off) has the tab broken off, meaning the seat shifts under cornering (they are sport seats).
Mechanic this morning claimed it can't be welded since it's cast - can I just assume it's because he didn't have the right welding gear?
If not - is there a way to disassemble and replace that bracket?
I am guessing there is...but want to check weldability first.
There's always this full resto....http://www.e30tech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=82306

No problem welding these with a normal 'hobby' mig . If your seat height and backrest shocks are good, I would repair it. A drivers seat mechanism, either left or right, with good shocks is VERY rare
The seat does not need to be fully stripped to repair it. Just remove the back and use a couple of damp rags / towels to protect the seat.

I welded mine back together a couple of days ago, haven't put the chair back in to test it yet, but gave it a fair few whacks with a hammer and it seemed solid. That was with a mig.
^Just be sure to cover up the base of the chair well. As I got lazy didn't cover it all. The chair cloth is knackered anyway but now there are few burn holes added
