Just failed an MOT on a couple of bits, but have an advisory for slight play in the steering rack, but no movement at the steering wheel.
I'm going to change the whole rack, but I think I read on here that an E36 rack goes straight on and will make the turning slightly tighter and improve the handling.
Is this true? Do they need much modificating if any?
And also, should you use new track rod ends for an E36 or E30, or are they the same?
Thanks all.

Third time this has been asked this week!
It's a relatively easy job, but it's not just a bolt on/off procedure. The full guide is available here:

As for track rods, buy new Lemforder ones for E30. The E36 ends are too fat for the E30 hubs.

It wasn't a moan
Just highlighting how popular this mod is right now.
Purple tag "067" racks from an E46 are the most desired racks, and can be had off here or ebay for a good price.

I can't help with price; the cost of bits where I am is very different to the UK. But something around the 50 quid mark sounds about right; some pay a bit more, some pay a bit less.

Pffft, don't worry about it. This forum would be dead on its arse if we never asked the same question twice

Just to add to this, All purple tag E46 racks that have part number 067 are the same regardless of the model they come from.
Even E46 compact racks are the same so don't pay more than £70 for one there are hundreds about.
