Aim for between 1mm and 2mm of toe in at the rims of the front wheels. I prefer to be nearer to 2mm than 1.
I'm not sure that wiki article about setting toe with a length of string is accurate. The idea of the packing pieces is 1) to get the string clear of the wheel rims, and 2) to get the pieces of string down each side of the car absolutely parallel with each other. (Rear track on a standard E30 is 8mm greater than the front, so to get the strings parallel you will need 4mm per side extra packing on the front wheels.)
When this is achieved, it's simply a matter of adjusting the track rods so that the front of each front wheel rim is 1mm further away from the string than the back of the front wheel rim.
Remember to check the rear as well when the string is set up. There's no adjustment, but it'll tell you if something's bent.
