I have two weeks holidays coming up and I thought about pulling the motor out of my 323i so that I can fix a broken exhaust stud and an oil leak. Is removing the whole motor a very big job? Will the timing etc need resetting? I have a good engine crane and engine stand. I have only taken motors out of aircooled VW beetles in the past and that is a totally different cup of tea. Are we talking a 5 hour job to get the motor out? I get the feeling it may be easier than removing and refitting the head.

Allow half a day.
If you lift the rear of the car, reverse it onto DiY type ramps, that helps to reduce the 'dangle angle' that you need to achieve to clear the slam panel.
I have always removed engine/box as a unit, and found it easy to seperate/re-assemble on the garage floor.
Un-plug the engine ECU and feed the plug through into the engine bay, then once the C101 plug is withdrawn you can leave the engine loom attached to the engine, saves a lot of messing about with individual connectors.
Do not forget to un-bolt the clutch slave cylinder!
