Up till now the central locking has been working perfectly, but recently the lock for the tailgate has started playing up & stays engaged.
After a bit of fiddling with the key, it starts working again.

What should I be looking for to sorting this?

similar w my 2-door 325i E30. Cold weather, battery near end of life. Check your voltage.
