Exhaust Manifold

I've been looking at the manifolds on my M52 and doing a bit of research too. It looks like a right pig to get around the gearbox with the flange still on the manifolds. I've seen other people have just welded the manifold into a down pipe instead of bolting it to the flange, i'm assuming this is the only way to do it with sufficient clearance?

Most are sleeved and clamped up, I change mine over so they just join at the bottom instead
