I need to clean up the pistons so that i can start building up the block.

There's a thin layer of carbon build up on the piston heads, i left them soaking in some gunk degreaser over night but hasn't done the trick.

Some one suggested to use an abrasive pad or brillo pad to remove it - is it save to do so?

I would be more concerned about whats in the ring grooves, but yes some scotchbrite and brake cleaner will see light work of that, dont use wire wool or brilo though

Thanks Dan!

Ring grooves I was thinking of using one of the piston rings snapped in half and scraping what ever is in the grooves?

So came home from work today and starred cleaning one of the piston heads with some carbon cleaner and scotch brite.....

I noticed on the head of the piston that there are some very fine circular grooves, when rubbing the scotch it seems that they are being rubbed off, especially around the edge.

Can anyone explain the reason of these grooves and what purpose they serve?
