heater fan

my wifes car is a 320i convertible e reg the heater fan has given up the ghost, after making a terrible racket for a while, can anyone tell me if they are all the same? has anyone got one? has the dashboard got to be removed to change? thanks

Fan is changed by removing a panel held by four screws at the rear of the engine compartment, unclipping the plastic fan shrouds, pulling off two wires and removing a spring clip.
Early E30s and those with aircon. use a different, larger assembly than later, non aircon. models.

sorry to hi jack, ive just pulled my touring out after 2 years, and the heater blower does not work at all on any speed, checked fuse 20, is there a relay? I can hear clicking noise from near rad in glove compartment.

The clicking noises you hear are probably the thermal overload tripping and resetting in the fan resistor pack. This will shortly be followed by the demise of said pack if you persist.
Take the fan motor out and service it.
