Hi guys,

have been without a tacho and temp gauge since swapping engines from M40-M42.

Tried directly wiring both tacho and temp gauge from the engine loom after continutity test proved wiring was ok to there, but no success. Took the cluster apart today to see what state it was in and this is what i found. :(

Looks like I need a new cluster I think!

You almost certainly don't need a new cluster, but it does look like you might need a replacement SI board to go in it.
This kind of thing is very common after an engine swap, but is not caused by anything you might have done wrong while doing the work. The problem occurs because you disconnected the car's battery while the work was being done, and this leaves already critically ill batteries on the SI board without their life support system, and they promptly expire.
