Forgive me for asking what might be a daft question here, I'm new to E30s.
Havig come from the world of mk2 golfs I'm used to the gearbox allowing for power/torque right through each gear, but on my 318 1st and 2nd just seem crap. Are there any boxes out there for my engine that are a bit more free revving or would I really need to do an engine swap to get what I'm after?

Not at all sure what you mean, but there is no alternative gearbox available for the M40 engine. The 325 was available with an optional "sports" gearbox, but that has ratios not too dissimilar to those on the M40 box.
Are you sure your engine is performing as intended? One of the problems with E30s is that they can go on and on with minimal servicing, resulting in a freshly purchased one performing far below the level it's capable of. Can all usually be put right by a thorough service.

It does seen quite lumpy on idle so perhaps it does need a damn good refresh. I bought leads for it the other day so I'll get get the other service parts on Saturday.
I guess it feels very underpowered because I'm used to a G60 Mk2 Golf.

If your leads aren't BMW, then leave the original ones on unless they're clearly hanging on to life.

A BMW isn't a VW. It just needs proper servicing, not aftermarket junk.
